Social Media

Addicted to Social Media Websites

I tried to avoid getting into Facebook, possibly because I have so many other existing responsibilities, interests and commitments that I just did not want to add another item to my plate. I ended up registering for an account, using the justification that I could better assist clients and friends who wanted to use the application down the road – but that was it. For the greater portion of a day, I even told my co-workers that I was not interested in Facebook and would not spend anymore time with it, after registering.

The Impact of Digg on Your Search Engine Optimization Strategy

Yesterday, the folks at Pronet Advertising, long known for the expertise in social media marketing asked the question: “How Do You Get Your Diggs?“. The truth of the matter is that there are a lot of savvy ways that website owners can gather Diggs (for submissions made of their website content) but a question asked by many small business owners (unfamiliar with social media) is “why this service should matter from an SEO perspective?”. Let’s take a look at 5 of the top stories on today’s Digg Home Page to understand how the “Digg Effect” can be valuable for search engine optimization.

Applying The First Principles to Your SEO Strategy

Read/WriteWeb contributor Sean Ammirati wrote an interesting article on the application of fundamental theory and its relationship to the development of innovative technology (in this case, social web applications). His “First Principles” theory states that the successful “conversion” of a user in the interaction of a social web application is that:

“the user must perceive they have received more value than the energy (and attention) expended to complete the task.”

From a design perspective, Ammirati offers his suggestion on how this can be applied to the following characteristics of web development:

  • New interactions users find valuable

In mid-May I had an opportunity to attend the MITX Marketing Technology Series event in Boston, which showcased various social media platforms and technologies, including Feedburner, Pajamas Media, Wild Tangent and Fox Interactive (Myspace.com). The archived presentations can be found on the archived events page of the MITX website, and I’ve also put them here as well:

  • Craig Teich, Senior Director of Sales, WildTangent (PDF)

Understanding the Social Media Madness

It’s important to understand the objectives of your social media strategy and how it impacts search engine optimization.
The integration of a social media strategy is one of the most popular topics in search engine optimization today. At SES NY, speakers on social media optimization agreed that the audience size had more than doubled since SES Chicago (about 5 months prior), reflecting the growth of interest. eMoms at Home recently published an excellent resource for understanding social media websites (in particular, Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon and del.icio.us) and social media strategy. The article breaks down:

  • Why you should consider a social media strategy.

How to Make del.icio.us a Part of Your Online Marketing Strategy

A few weeks ago I wrote a post on how to add “bookmark to del.icio.us” links to your blog posts and web pages. Quite often when I bring up the idea of the bookmarking website, I can expect a raised eyebrow, shrug of the shoulders, or just a glazed over effect which means the conversation will fall onto deaf ears. However, for those website owners that are looking for better ways to organize their online strategy, research hot topics and potentially draw traffic, links and networking connections, the use of del.icio.us is for you.

Prequel to the SEO Playbook – What To Do Before You Take The Red Pill

Over the past month, I’ve been having conversations with a few successful entrepreneurs in their own right, that have yet to make the jump to creating a complete website experience with search engine marketing as a core component of traffic and lead generation. They understand the importance of being visible in search engines – both through PPC and organic search results – and realize that there is a time commitment and a financial investment. I had been building a list of “must-read” website resources, so that these folks, and other small business owners, can get have their own initial dossier of web design, development and search engine marketing knowledge to apply in their own business environments.

Two Easy-to-Use Tools For Creating Social Bookmarking Links and Icons

It almost seems like the most popular blogs are “too cool” to include social bookmarking widgets on their websites, but I still like playing around with all of the different tools and plugins that are out there for blog authors and webmasters. In the never ending search for interesting widgets, here are two easy-to-use tools for creating social bookmarking links.

Push.cx – Sociable WordPress Plugin
Push.cx offers a plugin specific to WordPress blogs that allows the author to add social bookmarking link icons to all of their posts, pages and resources. The best part about it is that there is almost zero need for coding experience or HTML knowledge.

How Add “Bookmark to del.icio.us” Links to Your Pages

del.icio.us is a popular social bookmarking website were people can save, tag and organize their favorite web pages and websites. Often times, you will find hyperlinks on blog posts and web pages that provide linking functionality for readers to bookmark the information right to their del.icio.us account. This posts highlights two ways to add del.icio.us links in WordPress as well as additional resources for TypePad, WordPress Plugins and more in-depth information and functionality.

Here is a simple piece of JavaScript that I use for my individual posts and pages:

  • <a href="javascript:location.href=’http://del.icio.us/post?v=2&url=’
    +encodeURIComponent(document.location.href)+’&title=’
    +encodeURIComponent(document.title)+’ ‘">

Yahoo Answers To Your Small Business Online Strategy

Understandably. there are precious few opportunities for the small business owner to actually take some time in the day to catch up on the news, email, industry information etc. With the online landscape shifting to a much more collaborative and community-based environment, there are opportunities waiting online for the small business owner to get their message out to individuals and groups interested in the expertise, knowledge and competitive value.
