I’m not a homeowner on Cape Cod, but am looking at purchasing a home this year and have friends and family that own homes across the Mid to Lower Cape Cod areas. One key concern has been the issue of finding affordable home insurance rates in the area. From a renter’s perspective, while rates have not increased tremendously, I have had to rewrite my insurance policy twice in the past 18 months.
Citizens for Homeowners Insurance Reform is a grassroots group of Cape Cod homeowners searching for solutions to the current insurance dilemma. On Saturday, May 5th from 2 – 4:40, there will be a free forum open to all Cape Cod residents who wish to discuss the topic of rising home insurance costs on Cape Cod. It should be understood that the Fair Plan Rate Hike Request that is being proposed for Cape Cod and the Islands could increase homeowners insurance rates by 25%.
The forum will be held in the Tilden Arts Center at Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable (right off of Exit 6 on Route 6). There will be an opportunity to address a panel of guests about the limited options for homeowners insurance on the Cape. Confirmed guests include Jack Golembeski, President of the State’s FAIR plan, Senator Rob O’leary, a Representative from Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office and WQRC NewsCenter anchor Kevin McGonagle will moderate. The website indicates that there will be a representative from Governor Patricks office in attendance as well.
