Feeding the Addiction - Fantasy Baseball Through April

With April flying by, I am happy to note two important baseball related items of significance:

  • The Boston Red Sox are in first place in the AL East, holding the best record in the Major Leagues.
  • My Fantasy Baseball team sits atop the Yahoo Fantasy Baseball Public League I joined this Spring

Fortunately, I’ve been lucky that my fantasy baseball addiction hasn’t kept me up late wandering through random baseball statistics and news of hot prospects, but I am sure as the season rolls along, I’ll be looking to bolster some of my lacking statistics categories with hot bats or key middle relievers.

Here’s my Fantasy Baseball roster to date:

  • Catcher: Ivan Rodriguez - Picked up a couple weeks ago in a fairly bad trade (on my part) - hoping for RBI and a couple more HR’s than my original catcher, Paul La Duca.
  • First Base: Adrian Gonzalez - I picked Gonzalez up on the waiver wire and he could be a superstar by the end of the year.
  • Second Base: Jeff Kent - Average, RBI and Runs have been good, but I need some more power numbers.
  • Short Stop: Julio Logo - I have Stephen Drew on the bench, but I need Lugo’s SB’s.
  • Third Base: Miguel Cabrera - All-Star and my first pick in the auto-draft.
  • Outfield: Lance Berkman - I need this guy to pick up the pace in May.
  • Outfield: Johnny Damon - same as Berkman.
  • Outfield: Vernon Wells - Fortunately, Wells is off to a good start and should get better with Troy Glaus back in the lineup.
  • Utility: Hideki Matsui - Back from injury but yet to get up to speed.
  • Starting Pitching: I picked up John Maine as a Free Agent and he has been lights out. I also have a solid one-two punch with Oswalt and Harang, but need some help from David Bush (who I may drop) and recent pickup James Shields (for strikeouts primarily).
  • Relief Pitching: My strength to begin the season, I have 5 closers (all above average, but not really “aces”) as well as Derrick Turnbow, who may become a closer sometime during the season. Right now, he’s striking out over 15 batters/9 innings pitched (pretty good).

Overall Assessments and Needs
My team is lacking power numbers (HR’s) but is competing in all other categories. Hopefully Berkman, Kent and Matsui start hitting some home runs in the near future. Eventually, I think I’ll need another starting pitcher, but my experience leads me to believe that someone will surface later in the season. There are a couple prospects in Triple A that could be lights out in the late summer.
